Reviewed: Craig Morgan at Brown County Music Center
Craig Morgan is not your typical country star. He’s a former Army Ranger, a firefighter, a TV host, and a humanitarian. He’s also one of the most authentic and passionate performers in the genre, with a voice that can move you to tears or make you want to dance. His latest album, God, Family, Country, is a testament to his values and his versatility, featuring songs that range from patriotic anthems to heartfelt ballads.
On his 2023 tour, Morgan is bringing his full band and his full energy to every show. He’s joined by his longtime collaborators Mike Rogers (guitar), Mike Johnson (steel guitar), Eddie Bayers (drums), Glenn Worf (bass), and Tim Crouch (fiddle). Together, they create a sound that is both classic and contemporary, blending traditional country elements with rock, pop, and soul influences.
The show I attended was in the wonderful Brown County Music Center in Nashville, Indiana. Morgan just released his newest album yesterday, and it was sitting at #3 on the iTunes chart, and he was pumped. He seemed right at home on the this stage, greeting the audience with a warm smile and a humble attitude, as if he knew everyone in the room. He opened with with his newest song from his new album, “Raise the Bar.”
Morgan then proceeded to take us on a musical journey through his career, playing songs from his debut album in 2000 to his latest release in 2020. He mixed upbeat tunes like “Redneck Yacht Club”, “Little Bit of Life”, and “Bonfire” with emotional ones like “Almost Home”, and his very emotional tribute to his son, “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost”.
Throughout the show, Morgan interacted with the audience, telling stories, cracking jokes, and expressing his gratitude. He also showed his patriotic side, honoring the military and first responders with songs like “Soldier” and “What You Do for Me”. He even invited some veterans and firefighters to stand and be recognized. It was a touching moment that earned him a standing ovation.
The highlight to me was his hit “That’s What I Love About Sunday”, a nostalgic ode to the simple pleasures of life. The crowd sang along with every word, creating a sense of community and joy.
Morgan closed the show with “International Harvester, dedicated to all the farmers. He thanked the audience for their support and their love, and left the stage to a thunderous applause and cheers.
Craig Morgan is more than just a singer-songwriter. He’s a storyteller, a patriot, a hero, and a friend. His show was more than just a concert. It was an experience, a celebration, and a blessing. If you have a chance to see him live on his 2023 tour, don’t miss it. You’ll be glad you did.
