September In The Rain
This beautiful song was written by the great team of Harry Warren (music) & Al Dubin (lyrics) and introduced in the 1937 film “Melody for Two” by James Melton. Among their other collaborations, they wrote all the songs in the musical “42nd Street”. Dubin had begun work on “September in the Rain” in 1934 and saw it published during February of 1937 when Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians recorded it with a vocal by Carmen Lombardo.
My parents had this vinyl 45 record in their collection, it grabbed me instantly, because of the catchy jaunty treatment, which was so different, and I loved that tinkling piano. Dinah’s performance contrasts very interestingly with the version of “September in the Rain” most of us are familiar with, Doris Day’s. Washington’s voice paradoxically sounds both creamier and edgier and her interpretation is far less sentimental and naive sounding than Day’s. She doesn’t seem to just be singing a lyric as if to entertain, she seems to be sharing an inner feeling. Dinah wraps her silky voice around this American Standard and nurtures it to maturity, ultimately owning this true classic.
We hope your September brings a sweet refrain from our topsy-turvy world.
The leaves of brown came tumblin’ down, remember
In September in the rain
The sun went out just like a dying ember
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it’s still September
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it’s still September
That September in the rain
That September in the rain
Songwriters: Harry Warren / Al Dubin
