XIMXIA’s “Anywhere But Here” Strong Message is Open to Interpretation

When MTV debuted 39 years ago, their initial entry into the music world was a video called “Video Killed The Radio Star.” It did, and it made us look at music in completely different ways for more than a decade. Video interpretations of songs can go in many different directions, from creating a full story of the lyrics to videos where the relationship to the song is fleeting at best. In a video of the title track off her new EP Anywhere But Here, LA singer-songwriter XIMXIA has done a bit of both.

Listening to the audio of “Anywhere But Here,” you can imagine it being a women’s anthem of standing up for yourself, taking responsibility for a relationship, realizing mistakes and correcting them. The musical background to the forceful lyrics is dramatic as it changes from a lush production to having a wicked pop kick. It delivers its message with depth and simplicity. And it’s fun.

The video is slightly less fun.

Directed by Wayne Williams, the video contains a violent content advisory. XIMXIA shows off her strong feel for performance in this cautionary tale of domestic abuse. It’s dark and offers a starkly different way of liberating yourself from a bad relationship. One not advised for a life of liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

There is strength in both the audio version of the song as well as the video. They both share the emotion of freeing oneself, though in hugely different ways. My suggestion is to listen to the audio first to better appreciate the message, then hit the video play for a thoroughly different ride. Both are extremely well done, with XIMXIA showing off both her musical and performing chops.
