The Roseline Releases “Catalpa” Ahead of November LP
Well yes Aunty Em, we are in Kansas once again. The Roseline, out of Lawrence, are back with a new album, their second released during the pandemic, and it’s a lovely Sunday drive of well-crafted lyrics, easy melodies, and sweet harmonies. Add a bagel and you can call it a day.
Constancy is slated to be released November 5th, and ahead of the ten song LP they offer their latest single, “Catalpa.” So what’s it like coming to terms with aging out of your hometown college town? “Catalpa” is a sort of confessional where the songwriter feels a twinge at no longer being part of the demographic while simultaneously accepting the knowledge he would never want to go back. The guitar sound is airy and laid back with a sense of melancholy supplied by the steel guitar.
With Constancy, founder and lead singer/songwriter Colin Halliburton expands the sound of The Roseline with some interesting studio forays including adding a touch or two of synths, as well as more songwriting collaboration. In speaking about the album title Halliburton explains, “There’s something to be said for stubborn perseverance. I think good things can come from the simple act of just showing up over and over again. It can be applied to your day job, your love life, your children, your side hustle, your hobbies, and beyond. That’s where the idea of “constancy” came from for me.”
Throughout the album appreciation for the everyday is evident. A walk down the street, an ordinary face, a cat watching a fish in a bowl…all looked at with a keen observer’s eye. Halliburton’s vocals are as always, easy on the ears and the band adds but never detracts from the feel and message of the music.
Constancy is out 11/5/21 via King Forward Records and will be followed by a tour of Scandinavia.
